Jess, Armand, Clove and Unnamed
All of you have sent essentially the same email. I have several good interviews with former doc students on this issue. Let me dig them out and put together a post. Until then you will not tell off your committee or send nasty emails. That all will come back to bite you in the ass and it is not a good idea. Yes it sounds like you have good cause but let me take the other side of the argument.
Each of you was selected to be in a doctoral program so you are bright and highly skilled. You also have powerful motivation to succeed. But you are failing and perhaps for the first time in your lives. Others have been where you are now so let’s see what they have to say about it. If I remember right most figured out it was fear that fueled the anger. Anger can get you in a lot of bad places and destroy a lot that you have built up.
I am pushed to my max now with one employee out on medical for over a month and another one with only two weeks on the job. There are only three of us and millions to move onto the correct folks. This has led to a lot of pressure and deadlines. My daughter is due to have a baby any day now and my graduate class has started with bright and eager students to teach. I do the website to help doctoral students and not to make money so it takes a back seat to my two paying jobs. I just want a few more of you to make it. It is fun once you have the doctorate.
I will pull together this post soon or at least send the same email to each of you with ideas from the interviews. Until then just do not do anything spiteful, hateful or angry. You can get on the other side of this and enjoy your dreams. Talk to a friend, ask to see a counselor at school (really that does help sometimes) and take some time off. Read my posting on Holidays a Good Time to Catch Up? That is a good start since we have many coming up over the next two months.
My Warmest Regards,
Dr. Parker
